“Desu” is the polite form of the copula verb meaning “to be” or “is”. It is the verb used to describe two things as being equal, that is, X = Y. Typically, this will be done using the pattern: X wa Y desu. It is easy to think that “wa” means “is” or “equals” here, but it doesn’t.24 May 2018
